 A Brief History of National Education Day:

International Education Day

On September 11, 2008, MHRD declared November 11 as National Education Day to honor Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. He was also the first Education Minister of Independent India. The day is celebrated as a tribute to the contribution of Maulana Azad to the development of education in India.

After its independence in 1947, India needed to reinstate all of its policies, and the field of education was an essential aspect of building the nation’s future. For the development of Education in India, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was a perfect choice due to his past efforts in the same field.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad introduced many reforms in the field of education. He laid the foundation of a well-structured education system in India. 

He stressed making primary education compulsory for every child in India. Maulana Azad was also instrumental in making the Indian Education System more accessible and affordable to students. The Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) was also founded in his name.

Summing up his vision, Maulana Azad said, “I believe in education. I think that it has got to be the most vital thing that a nation must do in order to grow.” He went on to state that “every citizen of India must have an opportunity to develop his brain and every child should be taught to love his country.” 

Achievements of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad:

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was one of the key figures who worked towards improving the quality of education in India. Here are some of the highlights of his work that made him a prominent figure in the history of Indian Education:

  • He made education available for every child in India.
  • He also made the education system more accessible and affordable to students.

  • He also made the University Grants Commission (UGC) which is now an autonomous body.

  • The MAKA Trophey (Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy) is an annual sports event organized among Indian Universities.

Consequently, he was given the honorific title of “Bharat Ratna” in 1992, which means “Nation’s Jewel”.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad National Urdu University (MANUU):

In his memory, the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) was founded in 2008 in Delhi.

The University is dedicated to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad who laid a strong foundation for the development of education in India. The University is located in Hyderabad. It is a very popular educational institution that has students from all over India.

MANUU offers a variety of courses and programs to students and it also provides its services free of cost. The university is affiliated with the University Grants Commission (UGC).
